Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has alleged that the police interference in tomorrow’s local government elections
Governor Fubara accused the Nigeria Police Force and its Inspector General of serving the interests of an Abuja-based politician to disrupt the scheduled . elections in Rivers State.
Speaking at a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday, Fubara claimed police attempted to invade the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office and steal sensitive materials.
He questioned the police’s motives, citing a court judgment directing the election’s conduct with the 2023 voter register and police protection.
The governor emphasized that Rivers State is complying with the Supreme Court’s ruling on elected Local Government Councils and the President’s directive.
He warned that any act disrupting the state’s peace would be the Inspector General’s responsibility. Fubara assured that the election would proceed as planned, with necessary security measures in place.
When asked about police withdrawal from the election process, Fubara stated that their primary role is protecting lives and property, not participating in the election itself. Other security agencies will provide necessary support if police withdraw, he added.
The Local Government elections are set to take place on Saturday, October 5, 2024.
