Former Nigerian international Etim Esin has raised concerns about the Super Eagles’ heavy reliance on Napoli striker Victor Osimhen for goals, urging a more diversified attacking strategy.

Esin highlighted the need for the team to spread the goal-scoring responsibility. “Back then, we had multiple sources for our goals, but now it seems to come either through Osimhen or his work. That is not acceptable in this modern era of football,” Esin told our correspondent. “If Osimhen doesn’t play, we struggle to score. He should even be rested in some of these games, like against Benin. Football requires good link-up plays and goals from all corners of the team.”

Esin’s comments come amid ongoing controversy involving Osimhen and former coach Finidi George. The Napoli striker has faced criticism following a social media outburst against Finidi. The altercation began after Finidi reportedly claimed he would not beg Osimhen to play for the national team following his withdrawal from two crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers due to injury. Osimhen, who was replaced by Enugu Rangers defender Kenneth Igboke, responded angrily, asserting he had informed Finidi about his condition.

The dispute has divided fans, with some criticizing Osimhen for his approach and others defending his right to express his frustrations. Former Nigeria goalkeeper Idah Peterside has urged Osimhen to apologize to Finidi, suggesting a ban from the national team if he fails to do so.
