The Defence Headquarters has swiftly dismissed claims of a coup plot allegedly brewing amidst economic strains, countering reports that the Guards Brigade had been placed on high alert.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, labeled the assertion by Sahara Reporters as “malicious and unfounded,” emphasizing that there is no basis for such speculation.

Responsible for safeguarding critical areas like the state house and the federal capital territory, the Guards Brigade is routinely on heightened vigilance as part of its operational protocol, clarified General Gusau in a statement issued on Monday. He underscored that the military has no intention or indication of orchestrating a coup, firmly condemning the insinuation as baseless.

In a bid to quell any burgeoning anxiety, the Defence Headquarters urged the public to dismiss the unfounded report and called upon relevant security agencies to take swift action against the publishers. General Gusau asserted that legal recourse will be pursued against Sahara Reporters, alleging their publication aimed to sow unnecessary discord within the nation.

General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, reiterated the military’s unwavering commitment to upholding democracy in Nigeria, reaffirming their stance against any subversion of constitutional order. The Defence Headquarters vowed to maintain vigilance against such unfounded rumors while assuring citizens of their dedication to ensuring peace and stability.
