At the briefing which was delivered by the Head of Project, Henry Iyowuna Cookey, Opobians are said to be delighted that the annual event has become a remarkable journey since its inception in 2018, successfully followed by second edition, 2nd of January, 2029.
“This marathon’s growth has been an inspiring testament to the enduring spirit of the Opobo Kingdom and her people all over the world”, he said, adding that participants will experience the vibrant culture, rich history and warm hospitality that Opobo Kingdom is known for.
Revealing the theme of the 6th Opobo Marathon as “Miles of Hope”, Cookey said it resonates deeply with the challenges and triumphs of Opobo’s collective experience, adding that the theme also “reminds us that every step taken, every stride made, is a testament to the power of hope that propels us”.
Cookey announced an increased prize of $1000 for the overall winner and additional cash prizes for the top 10 finishers, while a special category for the first three Opobo indigenes finishing the race, have been introduced.
While soliciting partnership from potential sponsors for the project, he said registration for the marathon began from November 19, 2023 and would end on January 1, 2024 through the website www.opobomarathon.com/register, emphasizing that impersonation will lead to disqualification, and that participation in the marathon is free.
